Snik's "Nocturnal" exhibition

This November 2011, contemporary urban artist Snik and Delamain Arts will present Nocturnal, a collection of work exploring the essence of the night.
The exhibition witnesses the merging of textures and materials, a fusion of techniques and a study of the beauty that can be seen once the darkness falls.

Created with painstaking attention to detail, the artist uses graffiti spray and stencils to transform canvases into a fluid motion of colours and greyscale. Working with delicate techniques of textures and layering, Snik’s compositions are regarded as fine art with urban roots. Each piece is classically framed and consists of an intense build of eight to nine layers of spray with darkness being the prevailing theme of the collection. Seamlessly transitioning from urban streets to a gallery space, Nocturnal is a celebration of the night, drawing the viewer into a dark and captivating world.

The exhibition will see eighteen one-off pieces of varying sizes, a release of 4 mixed media giclee prints, installations and a very special set of collaboration canvases with Danish graffiti artist Morten Andersen. Snik has exhibited globally in Melbourne, London, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin, as well as being one of the few commissioned artists to paint at the Royal Albert hall.

Nocturnal will be his debut solo show in London with Delamain Arts. Venue: 50 Redchurch Street, London, E2 7DP Starts: Wednesday 2nd November Ends:Sunday 6th November 2011

Ian Boyd Walker is a British artist who generally use his spray cans on large walls in the West region of England. For his second appearance in our "Modern Pin-Ups" exhibition, Ian is displaying two versions of the same stencil, representing Kelly Brook... I must admit I was certain it was Farah Fawcett but I was wrong!

STF - Moscato at Gallery Daeppen - "Co-Errances" exhibition

We love STF (Stephane Moscato)'s work. First and foremost because the french artist is ultra-talented and its compositions are ever so "wonderland" themed but also because the artist is a very nice guy with a humorist-sarcastic way of seeing things.

Once again, Gallery Guillaume Daeppen in Switzerland organise an exhibition "Co-Errances" (a word play between "co-errands" and "coherent") with a selection of canvases and works on book covers... Not unusual to paint and draw on book covers but STF does it in a superb manner, that somehow relates to the work of book binding craftsmanship. Moscato says that: "Two reasons why I use book covers as a support: texture is very similar to canvas but also books are linked to the transmission of knowledge, culture and imagination. A book is a symbol for science and wisdom".

If you live close to Bale in Switzerland, go and visit this super exhibition by STF.

"Geisha" spraypaint on canvas by Tony Perez

We got lucky and managed to source two great stencils from Tony Perez (Antonio Perez Alverez, April 4th 1965 December 21st 2010), one of the most talented stencilist, who passed away in December 2010. There would be a lot to write about Tony Perez, his kindness andhis talent...so we decided to show the "Geisha" piece and copy one of his last comment on life.
"Being raised in a place where differences were not only accepted but celebrated helps a child gain a greater sense of self worth, or at least feel that it is more important to be yourself and find your own path in life rather than trying to fit in to preconceived social groups. We all graduate towards people with similar ideas and views as ourselves, but to be someone you are not just to fit in, is to me one of the biggest injustices we can do to ourselves. That is not to say we should be different just for the sake of being different. We need to know who we are before we let someone do that for us. We should also celebrate what makes others different, and have an open mind to different views, cultures and aspects of life; social, ethnic and every thing in between. A social commentary on present circumstances here in the States is something I am trying to incorporate into my art work lately."-Tony Perez

Penny :: Hanging in the balance - Screenprint on 1917 Funf marks

We are always excited about Penny's new release...especially when one does not know it's coming... All it takes is a combination of one screen printer (Mother Drucker), Penny, 5 days, a stack of vintage cash and a hell of a lot of german beer to produce these mini-money prints. "Hanging in the Balance" is 10 colour design screen printed onto genuine Face of 1917 Fünf Mark all with hand-sprayed background. Note size 12 x 8 cm. Overall edition /20

I believe the edition was sold out within a couple of hours...we managed to get ours!

About Penny:

Penny was educated at Chelsea College of Art Design and Central Saint Martins and upon graduating, quickly established himself within the stencil art scene in London. He has received critical acclaim for his highly technical, intricately detailed hand-cut stencils, which he brings to life with the application of an idiosyncratic colour palette.

Penny regards the complex, lengthy process of stencil production as important as the final piece and his methodology greatly informs his work. Other themes include the juxtaposition of the industrial with the organic, playing with scale, the subtle subversion of reality and the creation of narrative within the inanimate. All these notions translate equally well to canvas or street, and with every street piece, further considerations are given to the context and environment. The interaction with the environment is an important part of Penny’s work.

Penny’s artworks are produced using highly complex stencils and spray paint. Penny hand cuts all his stencils using a scalpel, and one stencil alone can take hundreds of hours to cut. This process allows Penny to produce images with a yield so highly detailed that they are almost photographic.

"Modern Pin-Up" Exhibition - 4th edition :: Italia Ruotolo

The 4th edition of our "Modern Pin-Up" exhibition will take place end of September in our showrooms and the catalogue will be edited in October. This edition will be spectacular! An amazing artists, Italia Ruotolo, is blessing us by sending a superb painting: 'Lady Godiva"...

About Italia:
Italia Ruotolo was born in Naples, Italy. She classicly studied ancient Greek and Latin and later graduated at the Fine Arts Academy of Naples. For many years she worked as a goldsmith and designer. Ruotolo's work is a broad range of pop art and art nouveau. Her source of inspiration is the world that surrounds her. In her work, there isn’t much distinction between high and low cultural level, because she’s aware that the man lives in a myriad of sensory stimulation and is itself the product of continuing contradiction between what is real and what is mere appearance or mere fiction. We find echoes of these contradictions in her work in constant search of a balance between past and future.

Epsylon Point French street art godfather

I hear and read a lot about Blek le Rat at the moment (must be linked to the Banksy's documentaries featured on Channel 4 lately) and how great and not conventional his pieces are (Blek's...not Banky's)... well... France has another godfather when it comes to street art.. Epsylon Point...an unconventional, politically incorrect artist...and one worth discovering.

"Hayden" sunfire version by stencil artist Snik available at Finearte

Snik is definitely a stencil artist to watch...With impressive street pieces created in the UK (a regular at Upfest), Germany and France (Vitry), Snik is strengthening his position as a top class street artist...and with a solo show coming up in November 2011 in London., we have no doubt his works will be selling like hot-cakes. All of the aforementioned reasons are good enough to start collecting some of his early pieces or post-solo show work and we just have the right one at Finearte. "Hayden Sunfire" is a 7 layer stencil, painted with acrylic and markers - size is 40" x 32" and price is £750 with free delivery in the UK - although if you are nice enough we might offer a further, discretionary discount.

3 new paintings from Nathanael Draws at Finearte

Nathanael Draws - a British urban artist, always worked with various different mediums including packaging paper, sewing patterns, old comic's, spray paint, acrylic paint. He also uses bold and easily understandable images to create a dialog with the onlooker and the three new paintings Nathanael sent us at Finearte are no different: : "Never went to Church","Love Life" and "Sale now on" clearly offer to debate on religion, consumerism and suicide issues.

French urban artist Zalez at Finearte Gallery

Some artists give much importance to the speech which comes along with their works whereas others privilege the object. Zalez belongs to the second category. At the beginning, Zalez wishes to follow a conventional way mainly in the idea to acquire school skills. He attended design school in Montpellier initially, then visual arts at Toulouse Fine Arts school. Very quickly, he felt wrongly understood, and criticized. Then he decided to go on his own. Thus, refusing for himself any compromise, Zalez prefers to let its works speak about itself.

To carry out its canvas, Zalez uses the stencil again. As a "pochoirist "Zalez makes the difference by proposing a contemporary vision of his technique. Its canvas represents nude and lascivious women. Once again, he is lingering on the depiction of a certain female stereotype. The artist Intends to attract our attention by seizing the artificial image of the woman who is strongly depicted by the press and the advertisement. According to Zalez it is a modified and overrated image, which we ended up taking for model. The spectator leaves him seduced and shares the artist vision. He seems to tirelessly seek to appease a search, a phantasm.

Zalez's paintings are exhibited at the gallery from 20 May 2011.

Contemporary Photography as Art Investment

Photography - New York / London / Paris

A few days after the close of the AIPAD Photography Show New York, the city was preparing for another week of photo events including no less than five dedicated photography auctions between 6 and 9 April. Sotheby's kicked off the sessions generating the best revenue total of the week at $4.5m (and the second-best sales total of the year in the photography segment), several new records and a sales rate of 82%.
Its competitor Christie's organised no less than three Photography sessions at the Rockefeller Plaza on 7 and 8 April: Photographs from the consolidated Freightways Collection ($1.8m including fees); The Feminine Ideal: An Important Private Collection of Photographs ($942,000 including fees) and Photographs ($5.3m including fees, 83% of lots sold). Phillips de Pury & Company held the last sale on 9 April with a mammoth catalogue containing 259 lots, 90% of which found buyers (total sales revenue: $4.6 m)

Prices rising for the recognised masterpieces
Demand is intensifying for the strong, historical pieces in good condition as seen with one of Mathew B. BRADY’s daguerreotypes. This austere portrait of John C. Calhoun taken in 1849 tripled its pre-sale estimate, setting a new personal record for the artist at $280,000 (Sotheby's).
In the non-historical segments, the traditional pillars of the market were generously represented. Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, André KERTÉSZ, Robert MAPPLETHORPE, William KLEIN and BRASSAÏ were all there with prints from $5,000 to several tens of thousands of dollars.

The most expensive artists fetched prices above $100,000 like Ansel Easton ADAMS, twenty-nine of whose photos were offered over 3 days by the three auctioneers. Sotheby's managed to sell the best print – his dune landscape entitled Mount Williamson, Sierra Nevada, from Manzanar, California – for $150,000 at the top end of its estimated range. In total, Sotheby’s sold sixteen of the seventeen Adams prints offered on 6 April. With Adams collectors’ appetites somewhat sated, they showed less interest for the prints offered by Christie's over the two following days. Ansel Easton Adams’s record is still recent; it was set in June 2010 at Sotheby’s by his Clearing winter storm, Yosemite national park, (1938) that fetched $600,000, twice its low estimate.

The best results of the week's sales were generated by the surrealist MAN RAY. His Untitled (Photomontage with Nude and Studio Light) signed the best result of the Sotheby's sale at $340 000. At Christie's, the big winner was Richard AVEDON whose Marilyn Monroe, New York City, May 6, generated $400,000, a new record for the photo. In effect, the artist’s price index has been boosted by the recent record (20 November 2010) at Christie's Paris branch which organised a major sale of Richard Avedon’s photographs. His mythical Dovima with elephants, Evening dress by Dior, Cirque d'Hiver, Paris set a new world record close to a million dollars.

Behind Avedon, the winning quartet was William EGGLESTON (Memphis (Tricycle), $220,000, the artist’s third best result), Eugène ATGET (La Villette, rue Asselin, $200,000, also the artist’s third best result), Robert FRANK (Peru, $200,000) and Irving PENN (Bee on Lips, New York, September 22, $150,000 vs. a low estimate of $50,000). Christie's offer of works by Irvin Penn met very strong demand: his twenty-four shots offered over two days nearly all found buyers (three remained unsold). In fact the artist’s price index has never before been so high: it rose 223% over the decade.

Eastern European photography has the wind in its sales
We also noted a visible recovery in interest for certain Eastern European photographers. The Czechoslovakian photographer Jaromír FUNKE (1896-1945), a major figure of 1920s and 1930s photography, a teacher and theoretician influenced by surrealism, picked up a new record at quadruple the work’s pre-sale estimate. The piece entitled Composition (From "Abstraktnl Foto") and estimated $50,000 - $70,000 by Sotheby's, finally went under the hammer at $290,000.
In addition, Christie's generated a new record for Josef KOUDELKA who is known throughout the world for his work with gypsies. His Romania, a superb silver print taken in 1968, fetched $35,000 despite its provenance from a later 1980s print. Other poetic works by the artist, including his Ireland (Waves) and Switzerland (Falling Snow) were offered at Sotheby's on 6 April, but generated less enthusiasm selling for $6,000 and $8,500 respectively.
The recent focus on Central Europe has given a substantial value lift to its artists. The art fair, Paris Photo 2010 (17 - 21 November), gave pride of place to Central Europe, with galleries and artists from Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The success of the April sales is a good sign for the upcoming May sales. Sotheby's traditional May Photography sale is being held in Paris (10 May) this year rather than London, followed by Christie's on 17 May and Phillips on 19 May in London. The French capital has in fact become the nerve centre of Sotheby's photography sales in Europe. The heart of the photography market is returning to its historical centre and Christie's – the principal rival to the US auction firm Sotheby’s, was not mistaken in choosing Paris for its sale of photographs from the Richard Avedon Foundation. With more than $6m in sales revenue and a zero unsold rate, the English firm generated the artist’s new record equivalent to $945,420 (Dovima with elephants, €700,000 - 20 November 2010) and above all, the best total revenue for a Photography sale in 2010.

As contemporary photography Art Dealers we do offer a wide choice of photographers work for sale for the discerning collector.

The Departure of the Witches by Penny (d'apres The Departure of the Witches, 1878, by Luis Ricardo Falero.)

Stencil art (or pochoirs) can be a simple exercise...It is actually for many artists a quick way to create their artworks. For a few artists, simple stencils do not exist...they need complication....they need multi-layered stencils...they need to spend hours in preparing their stencil and hours in cutting them...

Penny is one of them...a London-based artist who decided that creating stencil is an ascetic activity...

Penny's last piece show what an ascetic person can achieve with a cutter/scalpel or God knows what tool one can use to cut paper like this...

Penny just released his last work d'apres The Departure of the Witches by Falero...

Here is Falero's work:

and this is what Penny did (and on dollar banknotes):

How amazing is this piece? AMAZING! Call it a masterpiece...and for sure when it comes to stenciling, Penny is a hell of a Master!

4 invaluable paintings "vanished" from Museum Fesh (Corsica)

This is a dramatic story that shows how humans can be stupid. The night watcher of the Museum Fesch who was going to be evicted from his allocated flat decided to complain about the matter...not by writing a letter or by going on strike, but simply by borrowing four invaluable paintings from the Museum (a Poussin, a Mariotto di Nardo, a Bellini and an 16th century anonymous).

As no harm had been done, our night watcher went to the police to confess and tried to barter with the council his flat...Having confessed the paintings were securely stored in his car, Police investigators went to retrieve them bu..What a surprise when they arrived to the car: it had been broke into and the paintings were gone.

So far, there is no trace about the paintings and the museum curator, the police and l'Office Central de lutte contre le trafic des Biens Culturels (O.C.B.C.) are worried the paintings could be now destroyed (they could not be sold on earth...).

After two years of refurbishement, Museum Fesch has the second largest collection of Italian paintings in France just behind the collection held by the Museum du Louvre.

Spliff Gachette at Finearte Art Dealers

15th February opens the first Pin-Ups pop-up show of 2011 at Finearte. For the first show we have gathered some amazing originals and limited editions from artists of all horizons and this time we have included some stunning pieces by some recognized and well known street artists.

A rare occurence in the world of Galleries is the presence of Spliff Gachette (aka Docteur Gachet)artworks.

Spliff Gachette is an « anartiste »as defined by the Dadaism movement. He fought against social injustice for many years stenciling streets across France - a "hobby" that had him arrested by the police and condemned by the French legal system.

Spliff Gachette now spray paint stencils over (empty) cigar boxes. Themes are often political, caricatural...and sexy...

One of the box Spliff Gachette exhibits during our Pin-Ups show show a super stencil representing a voluptuous pin-up (assuming she's Cuban) offering to the future owner of the cigar box a delicate present...

To admire and to own...
