This is a dramatic story that shows how humans can be stupid. The night watcher of the Museum Fesch who was going to be evicted from his allocated flat decided to complain about the matter...not by writing a letter or by going on strike, but simply by borrowing four invaluable paintings from the Museum (a Poussin, a Mariotto di Nardo, a Bellini and an 16th century anonymous).
As no harm had been done, our night watcher went to the police to confess and tried to barter with the council his flat...Having confessed the paintings were securely stored in his car, Police investigators went to retrieve them bu..What a surprise when they arrived to the car: it had been broke into and the paintings were gone.
So far, there is no trace about the paintings and the museum curator, the police and l'Office Central de lutte contre le trafic des Biens Culturels (O.C.B.C.) are worried the paintings could be now destroyed (they could not be sold on earth...).
After two years of refurbishement, Museum Fesch has the second largest collection of Italian paintings in France just behind the collection held by the Museum du Louvre.
