The stolen Sekoto: Colour me miserable

He was recognised as a pioneer of urban black art in South Africa – he broke the “native” mould and captured in brilliant hues the vibrant street life of iconic communities like Sophiatown and District Six. In 1940 one of his works became the first painting by a black artist to enter a museum collection. The only way he could see it on display at the Johannesburg Art Museum was to pretend to be a cleaner. Later in life he was hailed as Africa’s first great Impressionist and recognised as a master. Today, many of his paintings are worth millions of rand each.

CopyRight new exhibition in London (Pure Evil Gallery)

A much awaited exhibition opened in London at the Pure Evil Gallery, 108 Leonard Street: 'Pop Lives, Pagan Hearts' by CopyRight. The Bristol based artist is considered by many as "ultra talented" and following his appearance in "The Apprentice" has gained a larger audience than the 'Urban Art aficionados'.

CopyRight's technique evolves in the right direction and besides stencils, screenprint and "decoupes",the artist is now using neon lights and stained glass to experiment.

CopyRight's style and theme has not changed much though and one can criticise the repetitive use of female faces, butterflies and birds, bold words and decorative patterns...we love it though and a few pieces are worth the tag price. Mark Grambau's Superheros series

I just came across an article on lostateminor.com on the Vintage style posters of Dave Ault, an artist from Portland, OR ...and I just remembered that a few years ago I really liked and bought some posters from Mark Grambau (who unfortunately does not sell them anymore)... They were of a brilliant quality and I prefer his style to Ault.

Lollipop Tina by Urban artist Mittenimwald

At Finearte Gallery, we are proud to show a superb piece sent by German artist Mittenimwald.

Mittenimwald is a unique artist with the choice of inconography mixing religious symbols with punk style and nudity. An Explosive combination!

He told us the story about his artist’s name: in German there is an adage, “den wald vor lauter baeumen nicht sehen”, which means: “not to see the wood for the trees”. “There was a point in my life, I lost my job and I didn’t know what I should do. So I stood in the middle of the forest and I couldn’t find my way”. Middle of the forest, in German translation means: “mitten im wald” like mittenimwald.

His inspiration comes from a long time spent (working?) in advertising agencies. There, he learnt to influence people. “My inspirations are aggressive advertising, provocation and punk”.

Mittenimwald's pieces are immediately recognisable...and although he does not work "in the street", many of his pieces have been pasted up by French "Street Art without borders" group.

Chris Boffoli "Tiny People" in London

Chris Boffoli is less known than Slinkachu when it comes to "Tiny People" photography but after the exhibition at the Flaere Gallery in london, this might change. The Spring Medley exhibition runs in London - 21st - 28th May

Christopher Boffoli (b. Massachusetts, US) belongs to a select group of artists who play with scale, magnifying and subverting the everyday to create a world for his meticulously hand-painted miniature figures to inhabit.

Christopher Boffoli is a Seattle-based photographer, artist, writer and filmmaker. With a background in literature and writing, he worked for more than twelve years in the field of philanthropy before focusing on fine art photography. He belongs to a select group of artists who play with scale, magnifying and subverting the everyday to create a world for his meticiulously hand-painted miniature figures to inhabit. “There is in some part a god-like feeling to having command of an entire world, which you can rearrange at any capricious whim.”The engaging and humorous results also offer commentary on America’s overconsumption and the country’s sometimes dysfunctional relationship with food.

Represented by galleries in Canada, the US, the UK and Monaco, his work has been published, online and in print, in more than 80 countries around the world.

The Apprentice - Urban Art Edition

So, did you watch it? Yes the contestants may have made the whole experience a tad cringy, but what great exposure for the artists involved! The UK can feel proud of its creative culture and artistic talent as the Country Urban Art heritage appeared on last night ‘The Apprentice’ show on BBC One, 9th May, 2012. In the show’s eighth task, contestants were sent to Bristol, meeting with a number of the city’s own urban artists to meet the challenge of creating a pop-up art gallery in which to sell their urban style artwork. Copyright, Bristol's most upcoming Urban artist featured in the programme and was one of the artist chosen by one of the team.
